Why Meredith and her sister never talk to each other in the TV show Grey’a Anatomy?

I watched the show Grey's Anatomy DVD and I found that Meredith and her sister never talk to each other. So I want to know what happened to them. Could you give me some information?

A2: Actually, they do talk to each other but they're not as close as you would think sisters would be. Meredith is closer to everyone else except for Lexie. From the beginning, Meredith was distance because of the whole issue with her father and for that she wanted nothing to do with Lexie. Eventually she warmed up.
